Southern Lights

New Zealand has issued 6 new stamps with postage values of $1.00, $1.80, $2.00, $2.20, $2.70 and $3.30 named "Southern Lights" on February 8th, 2017. These stamps depict 6 different views of the Southern Lights from the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. The reserve in located in the Mackenzie Basin of the South Island where light is weak making it a great place for stargazing. The colorful Southern Lights are the result of electrically charged particles from solor winds reacting with gases in the earths atmosphere. A miniature sheet is also being issued. It contains a special silver foil that reproduces the shimmering effect of the Southern Lights.

Southern Lights stamps can be purchase as a set of 6, Sheets of 25, Blocks of 6, Presentation Pack and FDCs. The size of each stamp is 48mm x 30mm with a Stamp perforation size is 14.59 x 14 using the 2cm reference. They were printed by Southern Color Print using the four color offset lithography printing process with Tullis Russell 104gsm gummed stamp paper.
