Niue 2016 Humpback Whales

The New Zealand Postal Service will issue 4 new stamps with postage values of 30c, $1.40, $2.00 and $4.00 named "Niue 2016 Humpback Whales" on August 3rd, 2016. These four stamps are being issued to feature the magnificent humpback whale. The stamps depict humpback whales in Niue exhibiting a range of behaviors. Each of the stamps and the behavior its exhibiting is described in the following table:

  • 30c Fluke up dive - when humpback whales lift up their tails out of the water it means its taking a deep or extended dive.
  • $1.40 Blow - humpback whales lungs are as big as a small car and when they exhale a mist come out of their two blowholes.
  • $2.00 Spyhop - when a humpback whale raises its head and eyes above the waterline. It uses this position so it can see the above water surroundings.
  • $4.00 Breach - when a humpback slaps its body on the surface of the water. It makes a loud sound to communicate with other whales. They also do this to play and remove foreign substances from their bodies.
Humpback whales were almost hunted to extinction and are now protected in the Niue Whale Sanctuary. It is the best place in the world to view them.

Niue 2016 Humpback Whales stamps can be purchased as a set of 4, Miniature Sheet, Sheets of 12, Plate blocks and FDCs. The size of each stamp is 34.55mm x 35mm with a stamp perforation size of 14.28 x 14.47 using the 2cm reference. They will be printed by Collectables and Solutions Centre, New Zealand Post, Whanganui, New Zealand using the four colors printing process. Paper type will be Tullis Russell 104gsm red phosphor gummed stamp paper.
