Town Festivals II

The Iceland Postal Service has issued 5 new stamps that have postage values of 112, 130, 175, and 230 ISK named "Town Festivals II" on the 8th of May 2014. This is the second issue in the town festivals series with the first being issued on 2nd May 2013. See the first town festivals stamp set issued in our Iceland archives. Town festivals in Iceland during the summer months have been on the increase in recent years and have become a valued part in the cultural life of many towns and communities. Each of the stamps and the festival it represents is listed below:

  • Lobster Festival (top left)- this festival was started in 1993. Hornafjorour is known for lobster fishing, lending its name to the festival.
  • Herring Adventure (top right) - this festival was started in 1991. It is held in Siglufjorour which is one of the most energetic fishing towns.
  • Night of Lights (middle left) - this festival was started in 2000 and has been held annually in Reykjanesbaer.
  • Danish Days (middle right )- this festival was started in 1994 and has been held annually in the town of Stykkisholmur.
  • Culture Night (bottom) - is an annual event of Reykjavik, the Icelandic capital. It was started in 1996 and is now known as one of the largest and best known festival of the country.

"Town Festival II" stamps can be purchase as a set of 5, Sheets of 10, Assorted Blocks and Assorted FDCs. The size of each stamp is 33.35mm x 28mm . The stamps were printed by Joh. Enschede Security Print using the offset litho printing process with 196gsm self adhesive paper. A total of 500,000 were printed.
