175th Anniversary of the Penny Black Mini-sheet

The Guernsey Postal Service has issued a new mini-sheet that has a postage value of 2 pounds named "175th Anniversary of the Penny Black" on the 1st of May 2015. This Penny Black stamp is the icon of the postage stamps. It is the first postage stamp issued in the world. Issued by Great Britain in May of 1840. It had a profile picture of Queen Victoria on the front and gum on the back. A small crown watermark was creased into the paper for security identification. This watermark is now known as watermark 18 in the Scott stamp catalog of Great Britain. Rowland Hill is depicted on the front of the mini-sheet with his signature. He publish a pamphlet about post office reform and challenged the expensive and extremely complex postal rates that were in force at the time. It was so expensive to send a letter it would cost a person a full day wages. Hill suggested during a parliamentary inquiry that a low uniform rate of prepaid postage based on weight was needed.

"175th Anniversary of the Penny Black" stamp can be purchased as a mini-sheet, Presentation Pack, or FDC. The size of the stamp is 28.8mm x 28.8mm with a perforation size of 12.5 using the 2cm reference. The mini-sheet size is 70mm x 110mm. It was printed by Lowe Martin using the offset lithography printing process with 110gsm PVA Adhesive paper.
