Europa 2016, Think Green

The Faroe Islands Postal Service has issued 2 new stamps with a postage value of 9kr and 17kr named "Europa 2016" on May 9, 2016. The Europa theme for this year is Think Green which has been a project of the Faroe Islands since 1907 when Olavur A. Heygum a farmer and businessman, attempted to have a Hydroelectic plant build in his hometown of Vestmanna. Although the project failed because of lack of finances, a hydroelectric plant was finally built in 1921. Since then, many other plants have been built in the Faroe Islands. The Faroe Islands has also turn there energy production to wind technology. Giant wind turbines have been built around the country and are now being used to provide energy to the country. As of this date the Faroe Island produce 60% of their energy needs with renewable energy. It has been projected that they will reach 100% by 2030. Today all countries realize that oil and coal-fired power plants are contributing excessively to the total CO2 emissions. These emissions are already affecting the global climate to such an extent that we now are able to physically measure negative consequences. Some people don't believe this, but it doesn't take a scientist to know that a change in atmosphere will cause other changes in the earth. Murphys Law states: anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. Lets not wait for a disaster that will take years to reverse.
