Romare Bearden

The United States Postal Service has issued four new stamps with postage values of 1st class forever named "Romare Bearden" on the 28th of September 2011. This issue Commemorates Romare Bearden (1911-1988) as one of the 20th Century's most distinguishes American artists. His work has been groundbreaking in the field of collages depicting expression of universal human themes. Four collages by Bearden are described below:

  • Conjunction (1971) (top left) - is a large work showing a southern social scene using southern quilt-making tradition.
  • Odysseus: Poseidon, The Sea God (1977) (top right) - depict Poseidon who was the archenemy of Odysseus in Homer's epic poem, The Odyssey.
  • Prevalence of Ritual: Conjur Woman(1964) (bottom right)- is one of Bearden recurring central theme in his work with the mysterious conjur woman.
  • Falling Star (1979) (bottom left) - Bearden depicts the universal human experience as seen through its windows.

"Romare Bearden" stamps can be purchase as Block of 4, Block of 8, Pane of 16, or FDC's. The size of the stamps is 31.11mm x 31.11mm and the pane size is 177.8mm x 203.2mm. They were printed by Avery Dennison Printing using the gravure printing process.
