50th Anniversary of Space Flight

The United Nations Postal Service has issued three new mini-sheets and three new Souvenir sheets that have postage values of 4 and 98 cents, 0.50, 0.85 and 1.00 FS, and 0.35, 0.55, and 0.65 Euro named "50th Anniversary of Human Space Flight" on the 12th of April 2011. These new stamps depict various pictures of man's accomplishment in space over the past 50 years. It all began on April 12th 1961 when the USSR put Yuri Gagarin into outer space. Since then, American astronaut Neil Armstrong walked on the moon and American-Soviet joined together to launch the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project in space.
United Nations has established a Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS). This committee met for the first time on 27th November 1961, the same year as Gagarin's flight. In its 50 years the COPUOS has created five international treaties and five legal principles governing the activities of nations in outer space. These laws included:

  • The exploration and use of outer space shall be carried out for the benefit and in the interests of all nations, irrespective of the degree of economic or scientific development, and shall be the province of all humankind.
  • The banning of the placement of weapons of mass destruction in outer space
  • Outer space in not subject to national appropriation.
  • Development of guidelines for use by countries to prevent and mitigate the creation of space debris.

"50th Anniversary of Human Space Flight" mini-sheet and pane stamps can be purchased as mini-sheet of 2 or Souvenir sheets of 16, or multiple FDC's. The size of the stamps is 40mm x 30mm with a stamp perforation of 13 using the 2cm reference. The Souvenir sheets are 83mm x 260mm. They were printed by Lowe-Martin Group, Canada using the offset printing process. Total quantity printed of each is:

  • 44 Cents: 52,000 sheets
  • 0.50 F.s.: 55,000 sheets
  • 0.35 Euro: 65,000 sheets
  • Souvenir Sheet: 68,000 sheets
