Indigenous People, Vienna, 0.65 Euro

The United Nations Postal Service has issued three new mini-sheets with six stamps each that have postage values of 44 Cents, 1.30 Fs, 0.65 Euro named "Indigenous People" on the 8th of October 2009. The stamps depict portraits painted by Stephen Bennett of indigenous people around the world. Indigenous people are part of unique cultures that have retained social, cultural, economic and political characteristics that are distinct from those of dominant societies in which they live. Estimates suggest that there are 370 million indigenous people in some 90 countries worldwide. They face challenges as lack of basic health care, limited access to education, loss of control over land, discrimination, poverty, displacement, and human rights violations. Today the international community recognizes that special measures are required to protect the rights of the world's indigenous people. United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous peoples was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in September 2007. It emphasizes the rights of indigenous peoples to live in dignity, to maintain and strengthen their own institutions, cultures and traditions and to pursue their self-determined development, in keeping with their needs and aspirations. The Christmas tradition of Peace on Earth is the message Jesus Christ brought to us with the need to love and respect each other.

"Indigenous people" stamps can be purchased as three separate sheets, or FDC's. The size of each stamp is 30mm x 40mm and the size of each sheet is 110mm x 140mm. Perforation size of each stamp is 13 using the 2cm reference. They will be printed by the Lowe Martin Group, Canada using the Offset printing process. Total printed quantity of each is:

  • 44 Cents - 65,000 sheets
