Panorama of Murten

The Switzerland Postal Service has issued four new stamps that have postage values of 85+40 CHF and 100+50 CHF named "Panorama of Murten" on the 6th of May 2010. These stamps depict the only known 19th century panorama painting of the Battle of Murten created by Louis Braun in 1893. The Battle of Murten was fought in 1476 when Swiss Confederates defeated Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy. It is regarded as one of the most crucial battles in Switzerland history. Each of the stamps is described below:

  • Top Stamp - after the Confederates surprise attack on the Burgundian army. Charles the Bold flees on horseback from the camp near Murten. Half of his troops failed to escape and died there.
  • Second from Top Stamp - The Duke of Somerset and his mount lie dead in front of his tent, while his archers and crossbowmen continue to resist the attacking Confederates. Somerset was the most prominent mercenary leader recruited by Charles who used many mercenaries.
  • Third from Top Stamp - Confederate troops from various cities and regions push forward into the battlefield with their flags, in a compact formation. They are equipped with halberds.
  • Bottom Stamp - The Burgundian cavalry being harried by the pouncing Confederates.
