Domestic Birds

Switzerland Postal Service will issue 4 new stamps with postage values of 180 CHF, 110 CHF, 100 CHF and 85 CHF named "Domestic Birds" on the 30th of August 2007. These new definitives feature 4 common birds found in Switzerland today. They are the Chaffinch, Great Tit, Wallcreeper, and Tengmalm's Own. Each is describe below:

  • Chaffinch (85 Chf) - it is about 15 cm in height and is found wherever trees are in Switzerland. During the Summer months they feed mainly on insects and during the winter months they feed on seeds. In the winter a large percentage of them migrate to southwestern Europe. They reproduce with an average nest of 4 to 5 eggs that will hatch in a 12 to 13 day period. There young are only parented for 12 to 15 days.
  • Great Tit (1.00 Chf) - it is about 14cm in height and is found in woods, hedges parks or gardens. It feeds on insects, their larvae, spiders, seeds, berries, fruit, and buds. They reproduce with an average nest of 6 to 12 eggs which will hatch in about 13 to 14 days. The new born chicks leave the nest in about 18 days.
  • Wallcreper (110 Chf) - it is about 16cm in height and lives on rock faces in the Alps and alpine foothills. It feeds on insects and spiders in the rocky crevices. They reproduce with an average nest of 3 to 5 eggs which will hatch in about 19 days. These young chicks will leave the nest in about 29 days.
  • Tengmalm's Owl (180 Chf) - it is about 25cm in height and is found in forests, Alps and alpine foothills. It feeds mainly on small mammals. They reproduce with an average nest of 2 to 8 eggs which will hatch in about 26 or 27 days. The new chicks will leave the nest in about 34 days.

"Domestic Birds" stamps can be purchased in a set of 4, sheets of 50, Booklets of 10 (only Wallcreeper and Great Tit), Folder, Collection sheet, or FDC's. The size of the Great Tit and Tengmalm's Owl is 33mm x 38mm and the size of the Wallcreeper and Common Chaffinch is 33mm x 28mm. Each has 4 sided Serpentine Die Cut for perforation. . They will be printed by Joh. Enschede, Netherlands using the Rotogravure printing process with 220 gms self-adhesive paper.
