Railway Anniversaries

Switzerland Postal Service will issue two new stamps that have postage values of 85 and 100 CHF named "Railway Anniversaries" on the 7th of March 2006. The stamps are being issued to recognize the 100th Anniversary between the Bern-Lotschberg-Simplon Railways (BLS), and the completion of the Simplon Tunnel. BLS was founded on 27th of July 1906 and the Simplon Tunnel was inaugurated in 1906. Each stamp is describe as follows:

  • Simplon Tunnel (85 CHF) - is 19.8 Kilometers and runs between Switzerland and Italy. It's idea became a reality when the international treaty with Italy was signed in 1895.
  • Berne-Lotschberg-Simplon Railways (BLS) (100 CHF) - is a railroad company that covers more then 250 km and employs over 1800 staff. It operations include transportation for more than 28 million passengers and carrying over 2.1 billion tons of freight each year.

"Railway Anniversaries" stamps can be purchase as a set of 2 , Sheets of 20, Set of 4 Blocks, Folder, Collection Sheet or FDC's. The size of each stamp is 33mm x 28mm with a perforation size of 13 3/4. The stamps will be printed by Austrian State Printing Office, Vienna using the Four Color Offset Printing process with 110 gms gummed paper.
