The Hanseatic League 650 Years

Sweden Postal Service will issued three new booklet stamps that have a postage value of 10 KR each named "The Hanseatic League 650 Years" on the 7th of September 2006. The stamps are part of a joint issue with Germany that recognizes the 650th anniversary of the founding of the Hanseatic League. Created in 1356, the Hanseatic League consisted of merchants from hundreds of different cities and were very powerful. During the middle ages the Hanseatic League had influential political power in the Baltic region and its members were given extensive privileges. The members gathered for discussion meetings which were often held in city of Lubeck, Germany.
The three stamps reflect the active period in the Baltic region's history during which the Hanseatic League dominated trade. Each is described as follows:

  • Cog filled with goods (top left and bottom right)
  • Port of Visby with a Medieval building (top right)
  • Scene from a medieval shop that sells dice and jewels (bottom left)

"The Hanseatic League 650 Years" can be purchased as a booklet of 4, Collector's sheet, or FDC. The size of each stamp is 44.12mm x 26.78mm . The stamps will be printed using the Recess/Offset Printing process.
