The Big 5 Cartoons

South Africa Postal Service has issued five new stamps that have a postage value of Airmail postcards named "The Big 5 Cartoons" on the 14th of November 2008. These new stamps depict five of the largest animals found in Africa in a cartoon style picture. Each of the animals is shown smiling except for the rhino who could not be drawn with a smile says the artist Dr. Jack. Each of the animals shown on the stamps is listed below with some physical information:

  • Lion (top left) - know as king of the jungle have a social system based on teamwork and a division of labor within the pride(a company of lions). The average pride consists of about 15 individuals, including five to 10 females with their young and two or three territorial males that are usually brothers or pride mates.
  • Elephant (top center) - is the largest living land mammal. It is mostly found in the wild and requires a large territory to roam free and to feed itself. It eats between 200 - 250kg of food per day and it grows in weight between 5500 and 7000kg.
  • Buffalo (top right)- are herbivore and have horns that can grow up to 1.5 meters. The only predators of the buffalo are humans and Lions.
  • Leopard (bottom left)- often refer to an the prince of the jungle is the strongest climber of the large cats. It can survive in many different habitats such as forests, deserts, mountains and snowfields.
  • Rino (bottom right) - two of the five rhino species are found in South Africa, the white rhino and the black rhino. The white rhino being the largest of the two. Unfortunately although the rhino has survived for over a million years it is being hunted to near extinction and its population has declined by 90% since the 1970s.

"The Big 5 Cartoons" stamps can be purchased in a booklet of 10, or FDC. The size of the stamp is 30mm x 24mm. The size of the booklet is 150mm x 60mm. It will be printed by Southern Color Print, New Zealand using the offset lithography printing method with Avery Dennison B100 Glossback paper. A total of 100,000 booklets will be printed.
