The Big 5 of Birds

South Africa Postal Service has issued five new stamps that have a postage value of International Airmail Small Letter named "The Big 5 of Birds" on the 1st of August 2008. The stamps depict five of South Africa largest birds. Each of them is listed below:

  • Bearded Vulture (Gypaetus barbatus) - found in the high reaches of the Drakensberg Mountains.
  • Southern Ground-Hornbill (Bucorvus Leadbeateri) - has a body length of 88cm to 100cm and is the largest and heaviest of all the hornbills.
  • Blue Crane (Anthropoides pardiseus) - is a Southern African bird that belongs to the Gruidae bird family.
  • Kori Bustard (Ardeotis Kori) - is about 110cm in length and stands 60-90cm tall.
  • Common Ostrich (Stuthio-Camulus) - weights between 90 and 160kg and stands 2.5m tall. Its wing span is about 2m.

"The Big 5 of Birds" stamps can be purchased as a set of 5, Sheets of 10, Control Block, or Envelope FDC. The size of the stamps is 28.88mm x 38mm and the size of a sheet is 164.4mm x 129mm. . They will be printed by Joh. Enschede Stamps B.V., Netherlands using the Offset Lithography printing method with 110 gms paper and pva gum. A quantity of 100,000 sheets will be printed.
