150th Anniversary of the Apparitions of the Virgin Mary at Lourdes

San Marino Postal Service will issue 3 new stamps with postage values of 0.36, 0.60, and 2.00 Euros named "150th Anniversary of the Apparitions of the Virgin Mary at Lourdes." on the 8th of April 2008. These stamps tell the story of a vision that a 14 year old girl named Bernadette Soubirous had at Lourdes. On February 11th, 1858 Bernadette Soubirous, her sister and a friend went down to the river to collect fire wood. Bernadette heard a sound that startled her and it came from a grotto that she was near. She went to the gotto and saw a lady wearing a white gown, a white veil, a blue belt and a yellow rose on each foot. They recited the Rosary together and the lady told Bernadette to return to see her again. This was only the first appearance of the lady. On the eighth appearance the lady told her to dig into the earth with her hands and she would find a spring that could heal the sick. The Lady told Bernadette later that a chapel should be built over and around this spring for the people. A priest ask Bernadette to ask the lady who she was. The lady told Bernadette that she was the Immaculate Conception (Virgin Mary). Up to now 67 cases of illness have been healed by this gift from the Virgin Mary. Each of the stamps is described below:

  • Bernadette's Portrait (0.36 Euro)
  • First Miracle Healing (0.60 Euro)
  • Apparitions of the Madonna to Bernadette (2.00 Euro)

"150th Anniversary of the Apparitions of the Virgin Mary at Lourdes" stamps can be purchased as a set of 3, Sheets of 12, and FDC's. The size of each stamp is 30mm x 40mm with a Perforation size of 13 1/4 using the 2cm reference. They will be printed by Cartor Security Printing using the offset printing process.
