Grand Prix

Royal Mail Postal Service has issued six new stamps with postage values of 1st Class, 54p and 78p named "Grand Prix" on the 3rd of July 2007. The stamps are being issued to mark two great dates in motor racing history. The first date of importance was announce 100 years ago when the first purpose built race track opened in Brooklands. It was founded by the maverick automobile enthusiast Sir Hugh Locke-King. The second date of importance happen 50 years later when one of the sport’s biggest superstars, Stirling Moss, won the British Grand Prix at Aintree. Each of the stamps is described below:

  • 1957 Vanwall 2.5L (top left) - driven by Stirling Moss who won the British Drivers Club Gold Star a total of ten times.
  • 1962 BRM P57 (top right) - driven by Graham Hill who won the 'Triple Crown' (Indianapolis 500, 24 Hour Le Mans, and the Monaco Grand Prix).
  • 1963 Lotus 25 Climax (middle left) - driven by Jim Clark who won 25 Grand Prix races and two World Championships. Jim Clark die at the young age of 32 during a race.
  • 1973 Tyrell 006/2 (middle right) - driven by Jackie Stewart who won the World Champion title three times.
  • 1976 McLaren M23 (bottom left) - driven by James Hunt who won the F1 Championship title in 1976.
  • 1986 Williams FW11 (bottom right) - driven by Nigel Mansell who won nine Grand Prix's in 1992. He also secured the World Championship title the same year.

"Grand Prix" stamps can be purchased in a set of 6, Sheets of 50 or Medal FDC. The size of each stamp is 41mm x 30mm with a perforation of 14.5 x 14 using the 2cm reference. They will be printed by Cartor Security Printers using the Lithography printing process with PVA Gum.
