Tourist Stamps

Norway Postal Service has issued six new stamps that have postage values of 6.50, 8.50 and 10.50 NOK named "Tourist Stamps" on the 9th of June 2006. These tourist stamps depict some of Norway’s best-known attractions: Skibladner, Maihaugen, the North Cape Plateau and Kirkeporten, Bryggen in Bergen and the Atlantic Highway. Each is described as follows:

  • Skibladner (top left) - is the oldest operational paddle steamer in the world today. This year it will be 150 years old. It sails between Eidsvoll and Lillehammer on Lake Mjosa and carries more than 20,000 passengers each year.
  • Maihaugen Museum (top right) - located in Lillehammer, this museum has 185 old buildings and is visited by 170,000 people each year.
  • Kirkeporten (middle left) - also know as church door is located in the North Cape.
  • North Cape (middle right) - At 71°N, near Europe’s most northerly point on the island of Magerøya in Finnmark, the North Cape rises dramatically out of the Atlantic to a height of 307 metres. With 200,000 visitors each year, the North Cape is possibly Norway’s most popular tourist attraction today.
  • Bryggen (bottom left) - is the old wharf located in Bergen. From 1350-1754, Bergen was the seat of the German Office and center for the Hanseatic League’s trading activities in Norway. The area was therefore called the German wharf. Bryggen is included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
  • Atlantic Road (bottom right) - a famous bridge that connect Averoya in More og Romsdal with the mainland. It is 260 meters long and has a maximum clearance above the water of 23 meters.

"Tourist stamps" can be purchased as a set of 6, three different booklets of 10, Presentation pack, Collector's set, Collectors sheet, or FDC. The stamps will be printed by Royal Joh. Enschede, Netherlands using the Photogravure Printing process. The quantity printed will be:

  • 6.50 NOK, 1 million booklets of 10
  • 8.50 NOK, 350,000 booklets of 10
  • 10.50 NOK, 400,000 booklets of 10
