The Square Riggers

Norway Postal Service has issued three new stamps that have postage values of 6.00, 9.50, and 10.50 NOK named "The Square Riggers" on the 7th of June 2005. These stamps depict three magnificent square riggers sailing ships, Statsraad Lehmkuhl, Sorlandet and Christian Radich. The ships were mainly built to train sailors, but with nearly a 100 years of history behind them they were use for many different adventures. A history of each is described below:

Christian Radich (6.00 NOK) - was the youngest of the square riggers and was taken by the Germans during the war and ended up in Hamburg in poor condition. In 1947, she was rebuilt and again ready for training expeditions. She went to various destination in Europe, and from time to time to the USA. The vessel's most memorable trip was surely the film expedition in 1956-1957, where she played the title role in Windjammer.
Sorlandet (9.50 NOK) - was launched in 1927 and after many years of service the Germans towed her to Kirkenes, where she was used for coal storage and as a prison ship. The ship was once sunk and then raised and towed to Kristiansand where she was restored.
Statsraad Lehmkuhl (10.50 NOK) - was built in 1914 and sailed under a German flag as Grossherzog Friedrich August. In 1920, she was handed over to Great Britain as war compensation for WWI. Great Britain sold it to a shipping company which later gave it to Bergenss Skoleskib who renamed it Statsrad Lehmkuhl. During the second world war the ship fell into German hands and sailed under the Nazi flag as Westwarts. The war was hard on the ship but it was later made seaworthy for new expeditions in 1946.
The three square riggers are now kept active with the support of sponsors and friends. They take part in regattas and film recordings, but the backbone of their activities are trips with paying pupils and tourists in search of a different king of holiday.
