Native Seaweed

The New Zealand Postal Service has issued 5 new stamps with postage values of 70c, $1.40, $1.90, $2.40 and $2.90 named "Native Seaweed" on the 5th of February 2014. These new stamps depict only five of the nearly 900 different species of seaweed found around New Zealand, and a third of these species can only be found in New Zealand. Seaweed is important to marine life for it provides food, habitats and shelter for a wide variety of them. This stamp issue depicts five beautiful unique seaweeds with their scientific name inscribed. Each of the seaweed names for each stamp are listed in the table below:

  • 70c Hormosira Banksii
  • $1.40 Landsburgia Quercifolia
  • $1.90 Caulerpa Brownii
  • $2.40 Marginariella Boryana
  • $2.90 Pterocladia Lucida

"Native Seaweed" stamps can be purchase as a Set of 5, Sheets of 25, Assorted Plate Blocks, Presentation Pack, and Assorted FDCs. The size of each stamp is 30mm by 40mm with a stamp perforation size of 14 using the 2cm reference. They were printed by Southern Color Print Ltd. using the 4 color offset lithography printing process with 104gsm gummed paper.
