New Zealand Native Ferns

The New Zealand Postal Service has issued five new stamps that have postage values of 70c, $1.40, $1.90, $2.40, and $2.90 named "New Zealand Native Ferns" on the 7th of February 2013. They are being issued to display New Zealands remarkable biodiversity and the importance they are to New Zealands vegetation. The ferns depicted on each stamp is listed below with a brief description of each:

  • Hen and Chicken fern 70c - is a common forest species found in wet habitats throughout most of New Zealand.
  • Kidney fern $1.40 - is shape as a kidney and is one of New Zealands most distinctive ferns.
  • Colensos hard fern $1.90 - was named in honor of William Colenso who was an early missionary and botanist who collected the species near Lake Waikaremoana in 1841.
  • Umbrella fern $2.40 - derives its name from its shape and produces a bud at the top of its stalk.
  • Silver fern $2.90 - has a distinctive white underside and is New Zealands most widely recognized fern. It can grow about 10 meters tall.

"New Zealand Native Ferns" stamps can be purchase as singles, Sets of 5, Sheets of 25, Assorted Blocks, Mini-sheet, Presentation pack, or FDCs. The size of the each stamp 40mm x 30mm with a perforation size of 13.25 x 13 using the 2cm reference. They were printed by Cartor Security Printing, France using the four color offset lithography printing method with 102gms gummed paper.
