Year of the Tiger

The New Zealand Postal Service has issued four new se-tenant stamps that have postage values of 50 Cents, $1.00, $1.80 and $2.30 named "Year of the Tiger" on the 6th of January 2010. These stamps depict Year of the Tiger pictures and events from the Chinese lunar new year calendar. Chinese lunar new year stamps have become very popular to stamp collectors over the years; and are sure to be in demand in the future. Each of the stamps is described below:

  • 50c Year of the Tiger - Year of the Tiger begins on the 14th of February 2010 and finish on 2 February 2011. The stamps represents a symbol of courage and a fearless fighter who would ward off fire, thieves and ghosts.
  • $1.00 Tiger - people born in the Year of the Tiger (1914, 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974 1986 and 1998) are well liked because of their Personalities. Some famous names born in these years is Agatha Christie, Marilyn Monroe, Queen Elizabeth II and Tom Cruise.
  • $1.80 Multicultural New Zealand - Chinese people have been a part of New Zealand since the 1860s when employers hire them to work in the Otago gold mines. There are about 145,000 Chinese in New Zealand today.
  • $2.30 Wellington Beehive - a Chinese festival that has rapidly become a highlight of New Zealand's entertainment calendar. In Wellington, the 2010 Chinese New Year celebrations will include a colorful street parade, a bustling Asian market and a cultural showcase of local and international performances.

"Year of the Tiger" stamps can be purchased as a set of 4, Blocks, Strips, Sheets of 25, Presentation Pack, Souvenir sheet or FDC's. The size of each stamp is 30mm x 40mm and the size of the miniature sheet is 150mm x 90mm. Perforation size of stamp sheets is 14 and the size of the miniature sheet is 13.33mm x 13.60mm the 2cm reference. They will be printed by the Southern Color Print Ltd using the Offset Lithography printing process.
