International Year of Planet Earth

Ireland Postal Service has issued two new circular postage stamps that have a postage value of 0.55 Euro named "International Year of Planet Earth" on the 28th of April 2008. Proclaimed by the United Nations that 2008 will be the International Year of Planet Earth. The stamps are being issued to help increase public awareness of global issues that affect us all. For example, extreme weather events have increased in frequency and have made it more apparent that climate change is a global emergency to which we must respond. Other events will also be held throughout the world to increase public and government awareness about Earth sciences. The hope is that the world will come together and reduce the risks to society by recognizing and reducing natural and human-induced global hazards.

"International Year of Planet Earth" stamps can be purchased as a pair, Booklet of 10, Souvenir Sheet of 10 or FDC. The size of the stamp is 43mm Circular with a Perforation size of 13 using the 2cm reference. They will be printed by Irish Security Stamp Printing Ltd. using the Lithography printing process.
