The Planets

Ireland Postal Service has issued two new Se-tenant stamps that have postage values of 0.55 and 0.78 Cents named "The Planets" on the 20th of April 2007. This is the first part of a series that will be issued over a two year period during 2007/2008. This issue depicts Jupiter, Neptune, Saturn and Uranus with the Earth as a center piece on each stamp. Each of the planets special features is described as follows:

  • Jupiter (55c) - has a diameter of 142,984 kilometers and is the largest planet in our solar system. It has 61 moons and each of its day lasts 9 hours and 55 minutes Earth time.
  • Neptune (55c) - was discovered in 1846. It takes 165 Earth years for it to make one orbit around the sun.
  • Saturn (78c) - is 1.35 billion kilometers from the sun and it has more than 30 moons. Its days last 10 hours and 39 minutes Earth time. Saturn has rings around it that are made up of chunks of rock and ice.
  • Uranus (78c) - discovered in 1781 by Astronomer William Herschel. It sits on its side with the North and South poles sticking out the sides. It also has ring like Saturn except they are darker and thinner.

"The Planets" stamps can be purchased as Se-tenant pairs, Se-tenant sheets of 8, Mini-sheet. Prestige booklet, or FDC's The size of each stamp is 60mm x 24mm with a 13.5 perforation using the 2cm reference. The size of the Minisheet is 150mm x 90mm. They will be printed by Cartor Security Printing using the Lithography printing process. Quantity printed of each will be:

  • 55c Se-Tenant 410,000
  • 78c Se-Tenant 360,000
  • Minisheet 35,000
