Flight of the Earls

Ireland Postal Service will issue a new se-tenant stamp pair that has a postage value of 48 Cents each named "Flight of the Earls" on the 23rd of February 2007. These commemorative stamps honor the 400th anniversary of the Flight of the Earls which was one of the most pivotal events in Irish history. Toward the end of the 16th century an Irish rebellion against the English started and was named the nine year war. Hugh O'Neill (Earl of Tyrone) and Rory O'Donnell (Earl of Tyroconnell) and other northern chiefs form an alliance to fight the English. After a number of significant victories the Earls lost to the English at the Battle of Kinsale which ended the nine year war. The treaty of Mellifont was signed in 1603 which open Ireland to new English colonies. Hugh O'Neill and Rory O'Donnell fled Ireland to Rome in 1607 because they would possibility be arrested on charges of treason.

"Flight of the Earls" stamps can be purchased as a se-tenant pair, mini-sheet, or FDC's. The size of each stamp is 29.79mm x 40.64mm with a Perforation size of 14 x 15 using the 2cm reference. They will be printed by Irish Security Stamp Printing Ltd. using the Lithography Printing process. The quantity printed will be 410,000 Se-tenant pairs.
