Icelandic Craftmanship III

The Iceland Postal Service will issue four new stamps with postage values of domestic-rate (97kr), to Europe (165kr), and outside Europe(220kr) named "Icelandic Craftmanship III" on the 26th of January 2012. These stamp represent the art of Silverworks which has been a tradition in Iceland for centuries. The 50g to Europe stamp depicts a Koffur which is a diadem of gilded silver belonging to a headdress of the national costume. It was designed by the painter Siguroar Guomundsson in the latter half of the 19th century and is now being preserved in the National Museum of Iceland. Both of the 50g domestic stamps depict a chalice that is made of silver with gothic shape. The words of Christ concerning the New Covenant are inscribed on the rim of the chalice. It was made in Iceland and dates back to the first part of he 15th century. Lastly the 50g outside Europe stamp depicts a bowl Brum. It was designed by a silver craftsman named Petur Tryggvi Hjalmarsson. He study at the Institute for Precious Metals in Copenhagen. His work can be found in many churches in Iceland and in museums around the world.

"Icelandic Craftmanship III" stamps can be purchase as set 3, Panes of 10, Various blocks, or Various FDCs. The size of the stamps is 30mm x 40mm with a perforation size of 14 x 13 1/4 using the 2cm reference. They will be printed by Joh. Enschede Security Print using the Offset Lithography printing process with 110gms gummed paper. The forth smaller domestic rate stamp with the Chalice can be purchase as a single, Sheets of 50, or FDC. The size of this stamp is 28mm x 33mm with a perforation size of 12 1/4 using the 2cm reference. It will be printed by Joh. Enschede Security Print using the Offset Lithography printing process with 196gms self adhesive paper. Quantity of each are listed in the table below:

  • Large 50g Domestic gummed Stamp: 170,000 pcs
  • To Europe 50g gummed Stamp: 140,000 pcs
  • Outside Europe 50g gummed Stamp: 110,000 pcs
  • Small 50g Domestic Self-Adhesive: 2,000,000 pcs
