Icelandic Outsider Art - Icelandic Visual Arts I

The Iceland Postal Service has issued four new stamps that has postage values of 50g(ISK75) Local Letter, 100g(ISK90) Local Letter, 50g(ISK165) To Europe, and 50g(ISK220) Outside Europe named "Icelandic Outsider Art - Icelandic Visual Arts 1" on the 4th of November 2010. To tell the story of these paintings the Iceland Post has issued these four stamps of self-taught individuals who were so-called naive or outsider artists. Each of the artists are listed below:

  • Solvi Helgason (1820-1895) - is the oldest of these artists who was a vagabond who paid farmers for board and lodging with colorful portraits of hosts (Top right stamp).
  • Isleifur Konraosson (1889-1972) - painted pictures that featured the landscapes of his youth (Top left stamp).
  • Karl Dunganon (1897-1972) - turned his life experiences into pictures with dream-like or terrifying imagery (Bottom right stamp).
  • Sigurlaug Jonadottir (1913-2004) - began to paint narrative pictures of life in the west coast islands where she came from (Bottom left stamp).

"Icelandic Outsider Art - Icelandic Visual Arts 1" stamps can be purchased as a set of 4, sheets of 10, and FDC. The size of the stamps is 30.5mm x 40mm with a stamp perforation of 13+ using the 2cm reference. They were printed by The Lowe Martin Group using the Offset Litho printing process with 110gms Tullis Russel gummed paper. A quantity of 120,000 each of the top two stamps, and 200,000 of the bottom left stamp, and 150,000 of the bottom right stamp will be printed.
