Biology of Lake Thingvallavatn

The Iceland postal service will issue five new stamps on the 5th of September 2002. The stamps depict four species of Charr fish and one brown trout species that live in Lake Thingvallavath. In the past the brown trout would grow to 30-40 pounds, but the stock has now largely been destroyed. The stamps depict the following fish:

  • 20g Murta (Planktivorous charr)
  • 50g Urrioi (Brown Trout)
  • 60 Silableikja (Piscivorous charr)
  • 90 kuoungableikja (Benthicorous charr)
  • 200 dwarf (Dvergbleikja charr)
The stamps can be purchase in a booklet of ten. A gift folder will also be issued with these five stamps in one sheet. The folder is richly illustrated and contains information on the geology, biology and history of Thingvellir. The size of each stamp is 30.94 x 45 mm and the printing process used is Offset Lithography.
