ICELAND POSTAL SERVICE 2001 ISSUE

Iceland Postal Service will issue 4 new Whale stamps on the 6th day of September 2001. Marine Mammals III is the name of the issue and it will feature the four Whales shown above. A general description of each Whale is as follows:
The White Beaked Dolphin (Lagenorbynchus albirostris, top left) - The male is about 3 meters long when it is fully grown and weighs about 600 lbs. The female of this species is a little smaller than the male, but weighs up to 550 lbs. Their life expectancy is 20 to 40 years, and their food consists mainly of squid, herring, capelin, cod and other species. They usually travel in groups and the population around Iceland is estimated to be 20,000.
Fin Whale (Balaenoptera physalus, top right) - The male is about 18 meters long when it is fully grown and weighs about 80 tons. The female of this species is larger then the males and can grow to 20 meters long weighing 100 tons. Their life expectancy is 100 years, and their food consists of krill, capelin, herring and squid. The estimated world population is about 150,000.
The Sei Whale (Balaenoptera borealis, bottom left) - The male is about 15 meters long when it is fully grown and weighs about 30 tons. The female of this species can grow as large as the male. Their life expectancy is 80 years and there food consists of krill, small fishes and squid. The estimated world population is about 70,000.
Long Finned Pilot Whale (Globicephala melas, bottom right) - The male is about 8 meters long when fully grown and weighs about 5 tons. The female of this species is smaller and only grow to about 6 meters and weigh about 3 tons. Their life expectancy is about 60 years and they travel in groups. Their main food source is squid and fish. The world population is unknown, but the population around Iceland is about 200,000.
