150 Years of the Royal Channel Islands Yacht Club

The Guernsey Postal Service has issued six new stamps that have postage values of 39p, 52p, 53p, 59p, 69p and 74p named "150 Years of the Royal Channel Islands Yacht Club" on the 25th of July 2012. The Royal Channel Island Yacht Club was created 150 years ago and is still going strong. It has headquarters in Jersey and Guernsey and hosts a series of events and regattas(sailing Race) throughout the year. This year's major event is the Connex Spring Regatta.

The first Royal yacht Club was named in 1820, when its most distinguished member the Prince Regent became King George IV. Membership was restricted to those who owned a vessel above 10 tons and the gentlemen met in London and in Cowes twice a year to discuss yachting over dinner. Nowadays, these Yacht clubs gather their members for the love of sailing and not for their wealth or social status.

In 1833 a major activity was the annual Cowes Week regatta. It was so popular that the New York base Schooner America came to Cowes to compete in what was then called Hundred Guinea Cup. The race took the fleet around the Isle of Wight and the schooner America won the race spectacularly. From that day on the Trophy was known as the America's Cup.

"150 Years of the Royal Channel Islands Yacht Club" stamps can be purchase as a set of 6, Sheets of 10, Presentation Pack, or FDC. The size of each stamp is 28mm x 55.5mm with a perforation size of 13.5 x 13.25 using the 2cm reference. They were printed by Carter Security Printing using the offset Lithography printing process with 110gms PVA Adhesive paper.
