200th Anniversary of Charles Dickens

The Guernsey Postal Service has issued six new commemorative stamps that have postage values of 36p, 47p, 48p, 52p, 61p and 65p named "200th Anniversary of Charles Dickens" on the 8th of May 2012. Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth on 7th of February 1812. He spent his childhood in the busy seaside towns of Portsmouth and Chatham. He is now undoubtedly one of the most celebrated authors of all time. His appeal shows no signs of fading with his books remaining in print all around the world. The Guernsey Post has chosen six new stamps that depict some of George Cruikshanks original illustrations for Oliver Twist written by Dickens. George Cruiksanks is considered to be one of the greatest illustrator of his time. Cruikshank was one of the artists with whom Dickens personally collaborated. Each of the stamps is listed below with a brief description.

  • 36p - from earlier chapters of Oliver Twist this stamp shows a chimneysweeper named Mr. Gamfield who has agreed to take Oliver as his apprentice for a small payment.
  • 47p - depicts charity boy Noah Claypole who is a cowardly bully and sneaky character who mistreats Oliver and eventully joins Fagins gang.
  • 48p - depicts Oliver with The Artful Dodger and Charley Bates who make Oliver polish their boots while trying to convert him to become a thief.
  • 52p - Fagin and Olivers evil half-brother Monks track Oliver down to Maylies pastoral residence where they suddenly appear before the boys eyes before disappearing.
  • 61p - Nancy meets Rose Maylie and Brownlow who had earlier taken Oliver on the London Bridge. A suspicious Fagin has ordered Noah to spy on Nancy
  • 65p - is an image of Oliver and Rose Maylie visiting the old village church where within the altar stands a white marble tablet which bears the word Agnes: mother of Oliver and sister of Rose Maylie.

"200th Anniversary of Charles Dickens" stamps can be purchase as a set of 6, sheets of 10, Presentation Pack and FDC. The size of the each stamp is 30mm x 31.625mm with a perforation size of 14 x 14 using the 2cm reference. They were printed by Osterreichische Staatsrucke using the offset lithography printing process.
