Alderney Butterflies

Guernsey Postal Service will issue 6 new stamps with postage values of 34p, 40p, 48p, 51p, 53p, and 74p named "Alderney Butterflies" on the 28th of February 2008. These stamps depict six of thrity different butterflies found in Alderney Guernsey. Butterflies are very beautiful and enjoy an entirely positive reputation among humans. When we see one, we're not irritated but charmed. If one should land on our hand or knee, our natural reaction is to sit very still and admire its beauty. Each of the butterflies depicted on these stamps is identified in the list below:

  • Painted Lady Vanessa cardui (34p)- is a famous long-distance migrant and is found worldwide. It visits Alderney every year.
  • Grayling Hipparchia semele (40P) - found in the southern cliffs of Giffoine and the Houmet Herbe area of Alderney
  • Green Hairstreak Callophrys rubi (48P) - can be found in most areas of Alderney where gorse grows. It is almost invisible when it rest on leaves.
  • Speckled Wood Pararge aegeria (51p) - can be found almost anywhere in Alderney but is mainly known as a woodland species.
  • Common Blue Polyommatus icarus (53p) - one of Alderney's commonest butterfly. The male is consistently Blue while the female varies between brown and purple.
  • Glanville Fritillary Melitaea cinxia (74p) - found in abundance but is considered to be a vulnerable species. It recently disappeared form Jersey.

"Alderney Butterflies" stamps can be purchased as set of 6, Set of Sheets of 10, Souvenir sheet, Presentation Pack or various FDC's. The size of each stamp is 30.56mm x 38mm with a Perforation size of 13.75 using the 2cm reference. Souvenir sheet size is 100mm deep x 140mm wide. They will be printed by BDT International using the Offset Lithography printing process with 110 gsm PVA adhesive Paper.
