Ramsar Guernsey

Guernsey Postal Service has issued six new stamps that have postage values of 29p, 34p, 42p, 45p, 47p and 68p named "Ramsar Guernsey" on the 27th of July 2006. The stamps are being issued to celebrate Guernsey first Ramsar site designated under the United Nations Convention of Wetlands of International importance. Located on the west coast of the island it measures 426 hectares and encompasses Lihou Island. It is comprised of a rich tapestry of habitats which include shingle banks, marshes, redbud trees and saline lagoons. It also has a wide array of flora and fauna, including seabirds, wildflowers and marine organism. Each of the stamps is described as follows:

  • Grey Seal Halichoerus Grypus (29p) - inhabits the North Atlantic Ocean and feeds mainly on fish, squid and octopus.
  • Ormer Haliotis Tuberculata (34p) - was once a delicacy food in Guernsey. But now because of its low population, gathering restriction of ormers are now in place.
  • Blenny Lipophrys Pholis (42p) - live in rockpools and shallow seas where they feed on barnacles and molluscs.
  • Le Creux es Faies (45p) - is believed to be the entrance to fairyland and is know as the Neolithic passage grave. It dates around 3000 BC.
  • Yellow-Horned Poppy Glaucium Flavum (47p) - this plant grows on stable stretches of coastal sand and shingle with a life cycle from April to September.
  • Oyster Catcher Haematopus Ostralegus (68p) - found in many different countries, these ground-nesting birds lay there eggs in stone and shell-built nests in the shingle.

"Ramsar Guernsey" can be purchased as a set of 6, Souvenir sheet, Presentation Pack, Sheets of 10, or FDC's. The size of each stamp is 25.5mm x 40mm with a perforation size of 14 x 13 1/4 per 2cm reference. The stamps will be printed by Joh. Enschede using the Offset Lithography Printing process with 110gms unwatermarked PVA adhesive paper.
