Janus Djurhuus

Faroe Islands Postal Service will issue ten new stamps on a mini-sheet with postage values of 7.50 DKK each named "Janus Djurhuus" on the 20th of September 2004. The stamps depict small pictures that relate to the famous Faroe Islands poet Jens Hendrik Oliver Djurhuus know as Janus Djurhuus. Janus was consider a poet that raise the self-esteem of a whole nation with the use of powerful words in his poems. He was born in Torshavn in 1881 and graduated from high school in 1900. He published his first poem called "The Faroese Summer Night is Tender" a year after. In 1914 he published his first collection of poems and during his career he published five more collections. He also published many translations of foreign poetry. One of his most famous translations was Homer Illiad into Faroese. When he died in 1948, Janus had created more than 200 poems and poetical translations.

Note: the Faroese Post is about to create a database for art and litterateur on stamps. English translations of the poems, that are used for this stampsheet, will be displayed. The address of the database is:

"Janus Djurhuus" stamps can be purchased as a Mint or Canceled Mini-sheet, or FDC with Mini-sheet. The size of each stamp is 26mm x 40mm with a perforation of 13, and the size of the Mini-sheet is 126mm x 158mm. The stamps will be printed by Cartor Security Printing, France using the Offset printing process.
