Brown Rat and House Mouse

The Faroe Islands Postal Service has issued two new stamps that have postage values of 11.00 and 12.50 DDK named "The Brown Rat and the House Mouse" on the 29th of April 2013. Faroe Islands was clear of the brown rate until 1768 when a Norwegian ship ran a ground on the island of Lewis in Scotland. This shipwreck was driven North to Hvalba on Suouroy which delivered the first rats on the Faroe Islands. When you think of the brown rats you think about them being a source of disease and want them destroyed. Attempts have been made to exterminate the brown rat population in all areas it is found. The brown rat weights around 200-400g and is about 21 to 29cm long with a tail length about 17 to 23cm. The female rat mates 3 to 4 times a year and has about 6 to 12 babies for each litter. The average life expectancy for a rat is about 1.5 years.
The House Mouse in the Faroe Islands most likely came with the Irish monks who were the first settlers on the islands. On the Faroes it is only found on individual islands and on some of the islands where there are no rats. Mice live on seeds, insects, corn and leftover human food. They can survive without water which gives them the ability to live in granaries and pantries. They can give birth ten times a year with 3 to 6 babies for each litter. General control of mice is usually done with traps and poison.

"The Brown Rat and the House Mouse" stamps can be purchase as singles, or FDC's. The size of the stamps is 42mm x 28mm. They were printed by Cartor Security Printing, France using the offset printing process.
