Canada Christmas 2008 Stamp Issue

It's that time again when postal services around the world issue their new Christmas Stamps. This year we decided to cover two or three different countries a week in our newsletter until Christmas. This week we visit United States of America and Canada. Each of their 2008 Christmas stamp issues are shown above and some information about them is listed below.

USA issued four new stamps named "Holiday Nutcracker" and one new stamp named "Christmas: Virgin and Child with the Young John the Baptist by Sandro Botticelli". Both were issued on October 23, 2008. A short description of each is listed below:

Holiday Nutcracker stamps were designed by Derry Noyey of Washington DC. Each of the stamps has a postage value of 42 cents and are being issued in double sided booklets of 20. Nutcrackers have been around for centuries and they range from simple designs to elaborate collectibles. This year the USPS has issued nutcracker designs as Santa, King, Caption and a drummer that will add a colorful and warm touch to the winter holidays.

Christmas: Virgin and Child with the Young John the Baptist by Sandro Botticelli stamps were designed by Richard Sheaff of Scottsdale, Arizona. The stamp has a postage value of 42 cents and is being issued in a double sided booklet of 20. It features a detailed oil on wood painting done by Sandro Botticelli around 1490. The painting is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Canada issued three new stamps named "Winter Fun" and one new single stamp named "The Nativity". Both were issued on October 23, 2008. Each is described as follows:

Winter Fun stamps were design by Susan Scott and feature popular childhood winter activities. The three stamps have postage values of 96 Cents, $1.60 and Permanent(52 Cents). Each stamp size is 30mm x 36mm with a simulated perforation. They will be printed by Lowe-Martin using the Lithography printing process with Tullis Russell paper and pressure type gum. The permanent stamps can be purchase in a booklet of 12 and the 96 Cents and $1.60 can be purchase in a booklets of 6. A souvenir sheet, Gutter product and Official First Day Cover are also available.

The Nativity stamp was design by Joseph Gault and features Mary the blessed mother and baby Jesus. The stamp has a postage value of Permanent(52 Cents) and can be purchase in a booklet of 12 or Official First Day Cover. The size of the stamp is 24.75mm x 32.25mm with a simulated perforation. It will be printed by Lowe-Martin using Lithography printing method with Tullis Russell paper and pressure sensitive gum. A quantity of 24 million will be printed.
