Finland Christmas Stamp Issues

It's that time again when postal services around the world issue their new Christmas Stamps. This year we decided to cover two different countries a week in our newsletter until Christmas. This week we visit Australia and Finland. Each of their 2007 Christmas stamp issues are shown above and their specification are listed below.

Australia issued five new stamps named "50 Years of Australian Christmas Stamps". They were designed by Melinda Coombes and issued on November 1, 2007.

"50 Years of Christmas Stamps" depict old stamp issues from the past 50 years beginning with 1957 and ending in 1996. They are being issued with postage values of 45c, 50c and $1.10 The name of each stamp and the year it was issued is listed below:
  • Christmas 1957(Top Left) - is the first Australian Christmas stamp. It was design by Donald Cameron and taken from the painting "The Infant Samuel" painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds.
  • Christmas 1977(Bottom Left) - this stamp was named the "Surfing Santa" design by Roger Roberts.
  • Christmas 1984(Bottom Center) - depicts the Modonna and Child in a stained glass window and was designed by Ken Cato. The stained glass window was made in 1938 for St Bartholomew's Church of England in Norwood, South Australia.
  • Christmas 1990(Bottom Right) - this stamp was design by Marg Towt's and shifts the place of Nativity from its traditional scene to Australian bushland. It depicts the baby Jesus surrounded by the native Koalas and Kangaroo.
  • Christmas 1996 - depicts the Virgin Mary and Child and was designed by Sophie Byass.

"50 Years of Australian Christmas" stamps can be purchased as a set of 5, Sheetlets in various sizes, Stamp Pack, Mini-sheet, Booklets, Gutters, or FDC. The size of each stamp is 26mm x 37.5mm and 37.5mm x 25mm. Mini-sheet size is 147mm x 104mm and Surfing Santa sheetlet size is 162mm x 104mm.. There are two perforation sizes: 14.6 x 18.86 and 18.86 x 14.6 using the 2cm reference. They will be printed by SEP Sprint using the Lithography printing process with gummed Tullis Russell paper and B90/B100 self adhesive paper for Minisheet, sheetlets and booklets.

Finland issued two Christmas stamps with playful mice designed by Marjo Nygard-Niemisto and named "Gingerbread Mouse and Straw Goat and Mouse". The stamps depict a mouse with a gingerbread cone fill with goodies and a Straw Goat being ridden by a mouse. The stamps have postage values of 0.55 and 0.70 Euro and were issued on November 11, 2007. Each is described as follows:

"Gingerbread Mouse and Straw Goat and Mouse" stamps can be purchased as singles, Booklet of 20 (0.55 Euro), Booklet of 10 (1st Class) or FDC. The size of Gingerbread Mouse stamp is 34.5mm x 24.5mm and the size of the Straw Goat and Mouse stamp is 24.5mm x 34.5mm. A Safety Perforation is used for both stamps. They will be printed by Joh. Enschede Stamps, Netherlands using the gravure printing process with 200g self-adhesive paper. A quantity of 43 million Gingerbread Mouse stamps and 6 million of the Straw Goat and Mouse stamps will be printed
