It's that time again when postal services around the world issue their new Christmas Stamps. This year we decided to cover three different countries a week in our newsletter until Christmas. This week we visit United States of America, Finland and South Africa. Each of their 2006 Christmas stamp issues and specification are listed below.
United States of America issued one stamp named "Madonna and Child with Bird" and a four stamp set named "Snowflakes". Madonna and Child was designed by Michael Osborne and issued on October 17 2006, and the Snowflakes were designed by Richard Sheaff and issued on October 5, 2006.
Madonna and Child with Bird is a 39 Cents stamp and depicts a famous painting by Ignacio Chacon. The painting represents Madonna as the Virgin Mary holding the infant child Jesus. It has a kiss cut perforation and is 0.91" x 1.19" in size. The pane size is 2.38" x 5.76". It is being printed by Ashton Potter USA using the Offset printing process with Type III paper and self-adhesive gum. The stamp can be purchased in a double sided pane of 20 stamps. A quantity of 35 million panes are being printed.
Finland issued a two stamp Christmas set designed by Leena Airikkala and named "Leena Airikkala's Christmas Stamps Shine with Winter Atmosphere". The stamps depict children and animals and the they way they look at the world. Both stamps were issued on October 27th 2006. Each is described as follows:
The 1st class stamp depicts a Bohemian Waxwing bird. Its size is 24.5mm x 34.5mm and has a sheet size of 162mm x 109mm. It will be printed by Joh. Enschede Stamps, the Netherlands using the gravure printing process with 200gms self-adhesive paper. A quantity of 6,000,000 will be printed.
The 0.50 Euro stamp depicts a girl and great Tit bird. Its size is 34.5mm x 24.5mm and has a sheet size of 213mm x 150mm. It will be printed by Joh. Enschede Stamps, the Netherlands using the gravure printing process with 200gms self-adhesive paper. A quantity of 43,000,000 will be printed
South Africa issued 6 new stamps named "Jungle bells, Jungle bells". on the 2nd of October 2006. The stamps depict Santa and his raindeer with a new twist. Instead of Santa, the stamps depict King Lion in a donkey cart and the raindeer as a Springbok, Warthog, Zebra and a Hippopotamus. Each has a Standard postage value rate. A special International Rate Airmail stamp is also being issued depicting King Lion as Santa.
These stamps were designed by Dr. Jack for this year Christmas issue. There size is 24mm x 40mm with a 13.33 perforation. Sheet size is 144mm x 105.2mm. They were printed by Carter Security Printing, France using the Offset Lithography printing process with 102gms PVA gum paper. A quantity of 500,000 stamps per 2 values will be printed. A envelope with an FDC stamp is also available.
