Pioneers of Winter Sports

The Canada Postal Service has issued three new stamps with a postage value of 63 cents named "Pioneers of Winter Sports" on the 3rd of February 2014. These three stamps depict three women in action that became Canadian winter sports history makers and record breakers. Each of the women are listed below with a description of their sport and the records they have broken.

  • Barbara Ann Scott - captured the gold in the womens singles figure skating event at the St. Moritz 1948 Olympic Winter Games, Switzerland. To date, no other Canadian woman has been able to achieved this honor.
  • Sandra Schmirler - lead one of the most successful teams in Canadian curling history. Sandra Schmirler, along with Jan Betker, Marcia Gudereit, Joan McCusker and spare Atina Ford won the first-ever Olympic gold curling medal at the Nagano 1998 Olympic Winter Games.
  • Sarah Burke - was the first woman to land a 1080-degree spin in competition. She won four gold medals at the 2011 Winter X Games plus one more at Europes Winter X Games.

"Pioneers of Winter Sports" stamps can be purchase as booklets of 10, Set of 3 booklets of 10, Souvenir Sheet and FDCs. The size of the stamps is 26mm x 32mm, and the Souvenir Sheet size of 126mm x 90mm. They will be printed by Lowe-Martin using the Lithography printing process.
