Year of the Dragon

The Canada Postal Service will issue a new stamp with a postage value of permanent domestic-rate (61 cents) named "Year of the Dragon" on the 10th of January 2012. Canada Post issues this stamp to honor the year of the dragon which is the fifth sign of the Chinese zodiac. The stamp is fully embossed with Gold foil used in the dragons scales. Swirls at the bottom of the stamp are used to represent water. The Chinese characters in the top right corner spell out dragon. A Souvenir sheet is also being issue that depicts a fiery red dragon that has bursts from the water. It has one stamp that has an international postage rate. This Souvenir sheet is also embossed with touches of foil to give it vibrancy. The red background symbolizes good fortune and joy that is used during Chinese New Year celebrations.

"Year of the Dragon" stamps can be purchase as a pane of 25, Booklet of 6, Souvenir sheet, Transitional Souvenir sheet, Uncut press sheet or various FDCs. The size of the stamp is 32mm x 32mm with a perforation size of 13+ using the 2cm reference. They will be printed by Lowe-Martin using the 6 color Lithography printing process with Tullis Russell paper. Quantity of each are listed in the table below:

  • Pane of 25 stamps: 5,250,000
  • Booklet of 6 stamps: 1,800,000
  • Souvenir sheet: 500,000
  • Transitional Souvenir Sheet of 2 stamps: 200,000
  • Uncut press sheet of 12 Souvenir sheets: 15,000
