International Year of Forests

The Canada Postal Service has issued two new stamps that have a postage value of permanent domestic rate named "International Year of Forests" on the 21st of April 2011. These new stamps have been issued to honor the U.N.'s call for 2011 to be International Year of Forests. This global initiative launched in February during the 9th session of the United Nations forum on forests, seeks to: "raise awareness and strengthen the forest management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests for the benefit of current and future generation." The two stamps offer two views of the forests. The top stamp shows new growth in the North American rainforest with a close up of new trees in a canopy of green leaves. The bottom stamp shows the marvel of life found in the forest floor.

"International Year of Forests" stamps can be purchased as a booklet of 8, Souvenir Sheet, or FDC. The size of each stamp is 30mm x 40mm with a simulated perforation of 13+ using the 2cm reference. The size of the souvenir sheet is 70mm x 125mm. They will be printed by Lowe-Martin using the Lithography printing process. A quantity of 2,700,000 booklets and 200,000 souvenir sheets will be printed.
