Endangered Species

Canada Postal Service has issued 4 new stamps that have a postage value of 52 cents named "Endangered Species" on the 1st of October 2008. This is the third and last set issued in the series of Endangered Species. In 2006 animals of the land were issued; and in 2007 animals of the water were issued. This third year issue covers animals of the sky. Canada post hopes that these three year issues will let people know that at an alarming rate many different animals are on the brink of extinction. These animals are in danger of extinction because of deforestation and pollution which destroys their homes. According to the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC), there are more than 500 plant and animal species currently at risk in Canada. If action isn't taken soon, then many of wildlife in Canada will disappear. Each of the animals of the sky on these stamps are listed in the table below:

  • Prothonotary Warbler (Top Left)
  • Taylor's Checkerspot Butterfly (Top right)
  • Rosete Tern (Bottom left)
  • Peculiar Burrowing Owl (Bottom right)

"Endangered Species" stamps can be purchased in a booklet of 8, Souvenir sheet of 4, or FDC. The size of the booklet stamps is 50.5mm x 27mm with a kiss cut perforation; and the size of the souvenir sheet is 160mm x 75mm with a 13+ perforation. Each stamp will be printed using the Lithography printing method with Tullis Russell paper. The booklet stamps will have a pressure sensitive gum, and the souvenir sheets will have a P.V.A. gum. The quantity of each is listed in the table below:

  • Booklet stamps - 3,000,000
  • Souvenir Sheets - 200,000
