Christmas Island Lunar New Year, Year of the Goat

This year the Australian postal service celebrates the Christmas Island Lunar New Year with a new sheetlet that contains a Miniature sheet and 12 zodiac stamps named "Year of the Goat 2003." It was issued on the 7th of January 2003. The stamps feature a goat with Chinese text that reads "Year of the Goat"(in gold foil). The miniature sheet design is based on one of the many Chinese folk tales involving goats. In this story five immortals arrived at the city of Guangzhou riding divine goats of different colors. Each carried an ear of grain, which was given to the people to teach them how to cultivate the land. When the five immortals departed they left the goats behind. The goats turned in to rocks and today the five goat statue is the symbol of Guangzhou city. Each of the Zodiac animals and postage value on the stamps is as follows:

  • 10 Cents - Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit
  • 15 Cents - Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat
  • 25 Cents - Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig

It is said that those born in the Year of the Goat are popular, easy-going, amiable, gentle and compassionate with a sense of fun and humor. To name a few popular people born in the year of the Goat are Jane Austen, Lord Byron, Bill Gates, Mel Gibson, George Harrison, Mick Jagger, Nicole Kidman, Michelangelo, and Burce Willis. If you were born in 1907, 1919, 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979 or 1991, you were born in the Year of the Goat and could be headed for fame.

The Year of the Goat 2003 stamps can be purchased as a single sheetlet, Miniature sheet, set of 2, many different FDC variation, and Gutter strips of ten. Each of the stamp measures 37.5 mm x 26 mm with a perforation size of 13.86 x 14.6 . The miniature sheet size measures 106 mm x 70 mm and the Zodiac Sheetlet size measures 170 x 210.
