Cocos (Keeling) Islands: 400 Years

Australia Postal Service will issue four new stamps with postage values of 55c, $1.10 and $1.65 named "Cocos (Keeling) Islands: 400 Years" on the 21st of April 2009. These stamps are being issued to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the first European sighting of the Cosos (Keeling) islands in 1609. The first stamp in this issue commemorates the sighting of the islands by Captain William Keeling of the English East India Company. The second stamp features a detail from Charles Darwin's notebooks and a sketch of a fish he found during a second survey of the islands in 1836. These islands were previously known as the Cocos Islands, but by the early 18th century they were know as Keeling Islands or Cocos-Keeling islands. Each stamps features:

  • 17th Century English East India ship
  • Darwin's notebooks and a sketch of a fish he found
  • Coconut Laborer ($1.10)
  • Dugong and Map ($1.65)

"Cocos (Keeling) Islands: 400 Years" stamps can be purchased as set of 4, Sheets of 50, Assorted Gutters of 10, or FDC. The size of each stamp is 35mm x 35mm with a perforation size of 14.28 using the 2cm reference. They will be printed by Energi Print using the Lithography printing method with Tullis Rusell gummed paper.
