Working Dogs

Australian Postal Service has issued five new stamps with a postage value of 50 Cents each named "Working Dogs" on the 10th of June 2008. These stamps depict the images of 5 different dogs that contribute to mankind today. Not only are these dogs used for guarding a home, but they are also being trained to do an assortment of different jobs. Each dog is described in the list below:

  • German Shepherd (Top Left) - are used extensively by police to apprehend violent offenders, tracking missing persons, locating weapons, explosives, and narcotics.
  • Australian Cattle Dog (Top Middle) - are natural herders by nature and can drive cattle over very long distances.
  • Beagle (Top Right) - has a sense of smell 100 times more acute than humans making it ideal as a quarantine detector. Today, it is trained to detect 30 different items of quarantine concerns.
  • Border Collie (Bottom Left) - these dogs are natural herders of sheep and have high energy levels.
  • Labrador (Bottom Right) - know to be used as retrievers for fisherman. But because of there calm temperament, they are also very good guide dogs for the blind.

"Working Dogs" can be purchased in a strip of 5, Stamp Pack, Booklet, Set of 6 Stamp Booklets, Gutter of 10 or FDC. The size of the stamp is 26mm x 37.5mm with a Perforation size of 14.6 x 13.86 using the 2cm reference. They will be printed by TBA Printing using the Lithography printing process with Tulis Russel (gummed) and B/C100 s/a (s/adhesive) paper.
