Australian Heroes of Grand Prix Racing

Australian Postal Service has issued five new stamps that have a postage value of 50 cents each and are named "Australian Heroes of Grand Prix Racing" on the 12th of October 2004. Each stamp image depicts one of the motorcycle riders who made their mark in grand prix racing in Australia and around the world. One of whom is the Australian great Wayne Gardner who scored an emotional victory at his home GP and repeated the feat again a year later. International motorcycle racing came to Australia in 1989, when the revamped Phillip Island circuit in Victoria first hosted a round of the FIM Road Racing World Championship. The stamps show an actual picture of each rider in action on the track with the background reworked to suggest speed. Each stamp and rider is described below:

  • Mick Doohan (Top Left)
  • Wayne Gardner (Top Middle)
  • Troy Bayliss (Top Right)
  • Daryl Beattie (Bottom Left)
  • Garry McCoy (Bottom Right)

"Australian Heroes of Grand Prix Racing" stamps can be purchased as a mint set of 5, Stamp Pack, Collector's pack, Booklet of 10, or FDC's. The size of each stamp is 37.50mm x 26.00mm with a perforation size of 13.85 x 14.60 The stamps will be printed by SNP Sprint using the Lithography printing process.
