Gastronomic Delicacy

Aland Postal Service will issue a new stamp with a postage value of 0.90 Euro named "Gastronomi Delicacy" on the 29th of April 2005. The stamp features Aland's 2005 Europa issue and depicts a plate of fresh-smoked bucklings ready to eat. Europa theme for this year stamp issues is Gastronomy, the art of good eating. Bucklings are Baltic herrings which have been smoked in a hot kiln with fir or juniper firewood after having first been pickled in brine. The result is a golden-brown luster and a really wonderful taste! The Baltic herring supplies Aland with a year round food source and is also a good source of income. The fish live in quite deep waters, far out in the Baltic Sea for most of the year until spring and autumn when they move closer to shore to spawn. They swim in large shoals and are in abundance. They usually weight between 25 and 60 grams and grow as long as 15 to 16 centimeters.

"Gastronomi Delicacy" can be purchased as a single stamp, Sheet of 2 x 15, Collector's sheet, or FDC. The size of each stamp is 36 x 31.56mm with a perforation size of 13. The stamps will be printed by BDT Security using the Offset printing process with 96 grams per meter square paper. Quantity printed will be 300,000 stamps.
